Vols 3 and 4 are found in two states: in the first state, three leaves of preface intended for vol.3 are found between the title page and text of vol.4. In the second state, the preface has been removed from vol.4 to be found between title page and text of vol.3 (Sale).
Vols 5-7 were also issued as part of the 2nd edition, 1749.

Ownership and custodial history note:RW.72.15-21 Presentation copy, inscribed inside the upper cover of vol.I: 'T. Penrose. From the Author.', the signature of 'T. Penrose' (in another hand) is inscribed in the remaining six volumes, but not in 'Letters and passages restored'. This was probably Thomas Penrose (1742-1779), poet of Newbury. The name 'C.M. Davis' is written in pencil in vol. V, with initials only in the other volumes, including vol.8. [i.e. 'Letters and passages restored' which is uniformly bound as vol.8].
