The author Susannah Gunning made herself the talk of London as a result of a scandal that erupted around her only child, Elizabeth, who might or might not have believed herself to be engaged to the Marquis of Blandford, heir of the Duke of Marlborough. She told friends that she was, but when rumours inevitably began circulating, both Blandford and Marlborough hastily denied them.
